Reading Material

“How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot”

Sooo, I haven’t been able to get the bus quite where I wanted it to be quite yet, but since I’m stuck here in Richmond, might as well get some reading done. And making solid plans for the animal rescue project!

Gotta have the bus runnin’ if she’s gonna be helping the animals :)

Still trying to get the bus fixed. Renov

Still trying to get the bus fixed. Renovations on the house are taking precedence over my bus. I’m a little frustrated trying to get it done :(

More focused ideas…

I’ve finalized my major “cause” for the trip.  Animal rescue seems to be it.  I’ve always wanted to open my own rescue shelter, but obviously since I can’t do that on the road, this is perfect!  I need to get in touch with shelters, pounds, and rescues all over the country.  I’d like to partner up with some rescues to work with and do some fundraising events with in the long run.

What I reaaaallly need to do is get all legal and get incorporated.  Which means I need to raise money and get the ball rolling.

Back to what I’d like to be able to do, I want to function as a connection…getting animals to rescues, getting animals to vets & clinics…maybe even help individuals along the way get their pets to spay & neuter clinics.  The possibilities are endless.

The purpose I really want to serve is to raise awareness of the lack of resources that many shelters and rescues have to deal with nationwide.  By simply bringing the animals from point A to point B, I hope I can show that by simply making resources available, we can help a lot of animals and help a lot of people continue to help the animals that they’ve dedicated their lives to helping.

Transport

I’ve always been involved with animal rescue.  I’ve always promoted adoption and have a few rescued animals in my family.  My dog Krueger is from Richmond Animal Care and Control and he’s been the best $90 I’ve ever spent.

I’ve been looking to solidify the things I would like to be involved with on the road so I won’t be too scatterbrained.  The projects also need to be feasibly done on the road, where I don’t need to be in one location to do it.

I’ve done a few animal transport trips bringing animals about to be put down to no-kill rescues.  With as much space as I’ll have in my bus, I can transport animals, since I’ll be traveling anyway.  Since I’m not going completely out of my way, I’m not wasting gas by taking single-purpose trip.  Also, by doing transport trips, I’ll be able to see towns I otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to see.

I’m excited to get this project underway.

Bus update:

Went to go see the bus with Emily today. I couldn’t get it started…actually I couldn’t turn the key =X I felt kind of stupid, but I e-mailed Brie & Ray (the super nice previous owners of the bus) so hopefully I can try again tomorrow to get the bus started.
I took some pictures of the bus with my camera phone. You’ll even get to see my gorgeous best friend!
I want to get some promotional photographs done with the bus soon so that you can get a nicer view of my starting point, plus some of the people (and canines) involved in my project

Plans

So, I had originally planned to travel up the east coast to NYC and maybe further north first to avoid the oppressing heat of a Southern Summer (I say that with capitalization because for those of you who have experienced it, it is an beast of it’s own).
However, since I want to be able to help out on this trip, I have changed plans. Instead of heading north first as planned, I will be heading down to the gulf.

I have volunteered with a few organizations to help out with the oil spill clean up effort.
Since it will take a while for my bus to be roadworthy, my best friend Emily & I have decided to take classes so we can become Wildlife Rehabilitator permit holders and be more helpful volunteering in the gulf.

Emily may also be coming with me on at least some of my trip, which despite my tremendous amount of love for my dog, will be nice. Having a human to talk to will make some of the long stretches much less arduous.

Got My Ride

I bought a bus from the nicest couple, Brie & Ray. She’s an 1978 Bay Window VW Bus and yeah, she needs a lot of work, but I couldn’t be happier. Finally have my soon to be traveling machine. I’ll post up pictures of it soon!

About the project

Alright, so this is another one of my little schemes that I’m famous for, but I swear, I’m going to make it happen.

My project (I’m not using the word plan because my mom always said, “Plans were made to be broken) is this.  I’m going to travel the country with my dog in my roadworthy vessel, have a vague itinerary to visit places where I can book photoshoots and have the chance to look around these places.

I plan on having a very media intense blog and will update whenever I can get internet access.

I also intend for to have this be a very socially driven project with input from everyone out there in the world wide…world giving me ideas and input on where to go next and what to check out.

I’ll keep my travels documented here and I’ll post up some gallery links from photoshoots, but for complete photoshoot galleries, visit miamali.net

My goal is to have awesome adventures and create an awesome eco(nomically/logically)friendly road trippin’ machine that focuses on having being a low budget/low impact way to travel and see all that this continent has to offer.  I want to show that it can be done without having to sacrifice comfort and utility while on the road.

Let’s see where I wind up :)
